How to Choose a VPS for Self-Hosting

RAM First

Self-hosted apps are RAM-hungry. Nextcloud needs 1GB minimum, Jellyfin with transcoding needs 2-4GB. Always size up - you can't buy RAM in the middle of a stream.

Storage Type Matters

NVMe SSD is essential for databases and photo libraries. SATA SSD works for most apps. HDD is only acceptable for cold storage backups - never for a running app.

Location = Latency

Pick a datacenter close to your users. EU users: Hetzner Falkenstein or DigitalOcean Amsterdam. US users: DigitalOcean NYC or Vultr New Jersey.

Bandwidth Limits

Media servers (Plex, Jellyfin) consume huge bandwidth. Hetzner gives 20TB/month - nearly unlimited for home use. DigitalOcean gives 1TB before overage charges kick in.

Our Testing Methodology

We deployed each VPS provider with identical Ubuntu 24.04 LTS images and tested the following workloads over 72 hours:

Storage performance: fio random read/write IOPS at 4K and 128K block sizes
Network throughput: iperf3 to 10 geographically distributed nodes
Real-app performance: Nextcloud file sync (10GB dataset), Jellyfin 1080p H.264 transcode, n8n workflow execution (100 concurrent workflows)
Uptime: monitored every 30 seconds via Uptime Kuma over 30 days
Docker performance: cold container startup time and Docker Compose stack warm-up
